A Continental gilt-metal striking table clock with alarm
Probably German. Early 17th Century
The case with moulded repoussé gilt-metal spreading foot cast with strapwork and foliage and on later brass feet, side panels applied with later foliate winged cherub central mount flanked by fluted pilasters, the dial with gilt chapter ring having touchpieces and outer Roman and inner Arabic numerals, central brass alarm disc and later single pierced blued steel hand, the rear with the strike dial and later cherub mount, the movement with iron square-section pillars and iron plates, later going train with chain and fusee, verge escapement now with front-swinging pendulum, the strike train with iron spring barrel and chain fusee with countwheel planted on the backplate, the alarm assembly mounted to the left side of the plates, the bell above secured with gilt-metal straps secured to caryatid finials (one later) and surmounted by a later cherub finial; basically early 17th Century with later additions and alterations
