A George II black and gilt japanned four train musical longcase clock

The case plinth on double skirted foot decorated with raised gilt and red painted gesso depicting a chinoiserie garden scene with a Chinese figure on a bridge standing beside a heron, the trunk decorated in a similar manner with chinoiserie figures, insects and birds of paradise, with carved gilt-wood dolphins at each angle to the lower concave moulding at the base of the trunk door centred by a later(?) bevelled mirror, the upper throat mouldings decorated with carved gilt-wood mermaids, the hood with brass-capped fluted columns flanking the door decorated with gilt foliage and birds, the cavetto arch lacking the sound fret but with original (damaged) quarter frets above and to the sides beneath the caddy top decorated with gilt chinoiserie buildings, birds and flowers and surmounted by a single ball finial (now lacking side finials), the 14 x 19½ in. breakarch dial signed John Ellicott LONDON on a silvered arched plaque in the matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and calendar aperture, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half hour and half quarter hour markers, original black painted minute hand and later hour hand, Apollo mask-and-foliate spandrels and with wheatear engraved border, the arch engraved with an elaborate sunburst and fixed with an arched silvered plaque engraved with twelve tunes;

the massive movement with thick brass plates extended at the top to hold the two pin barrels, the 12.5 in. long musical pin barrel playing on twelve bells via 23 hammers planted transversely across the backplate, the quarter pin barrel planted between the plates with 3¾ in. long pin barrel playing on four of the musical bells via six hammers, the movement plates secured by nine ringed pillars, four barrels for the going, hour strike, quarter strike and musical trains, anchor escapement with later pendulum; four brass-cased weights
