Lot Essay

This cabinet together with another similar, but larger cabinet, were part of the cargo of a freightship moored in Ghent in 1935. When the owner of the freightship died and his heirs refused to pay the harbour charges the customs of Ghent seized the cargo. In 1940 the Ghent customs finally confiscated and sold the two cabinets, still crated in 12 boxes, to Mrss Brands and Rogge partners in an import-export firm in cheese in Ghent.
During the war and shortly after both cabinets were assembled in the warehouse of Mr Brands and exhibited to the public.
With this cabinet there are two photographs of the cabinets made during their exhibition in Ghent. The photograph showing the present cabinet has a printed inscription to the reverse Splendid artistic cupboard in sculptured wood; russian style; proceeding from the Winter Palace; of Tsar Nicolas of Russia Unic masterpiece !
After the second world war the large cabinet was sold at auction, the present lot was sold to the owner's uncle in 1958. Not much later it was once again boxed and crated and stored untill recently.
