Twelve eyes
1. A healthy eye. 2. An eye of an albino. 3. A fleshly growth on the inner surface of the upper eyelid. 4. This degeneration of the cornea is the consequence of an earlier inflammation of the eye. The upper part of the cornea is still completely transparent and it is possible to see a segment of the iris underneath. 5. The scars of the cornea which are surrounded by cloudy dimming. Such dimming can be easily removed, but the scars themselves cannot be remedied. 6. A bowl-shaped growth on the cornea (This growth developed from an injury caused by a pointed instrument). 7. A rheumatic, scrofulous eye. 8. A scrofulous inflammation of the eye which tends to occur in children. There are two festering ulcers on the cornea. 9. In this eye, the red skin of the inner corner of the eye, which here appears pathologically enlarged, is particularly subject to inflammation. The lower eyelid has been pulled down so that its tail-shaped extension towards the outer corner of the eye can be seen. 10. Inflammation of the eyeball. 11. Inflammation of the eyeball in its later stages. The eyeball is swollen, the iris has transformed into a plug of puss. 12. This eye belonged to an 82-year-old man who had suffered from gout for 40 years; the eyeball has shriveled up, the eyelids cover it and have begun to develop a tendency to grow together at the margins. There are three gouty tophi on the upper eyelid; the lower lid has been pulled down. (2)
