SYPHILIS
The secondary period, which has a duration of two to three years from the time of infection, and the tertiary period, which follows the secondary, and consists of the remainder of the disease's duration. Whilst the patient remains contagious during the secondary stage, and thus is a constant threat to society, this is not the case in the tertiary phase, when the patient can no longer pass on the illness to anyone else. The specimens displayed here illustrate the two stages. (2)
