Lot Essay

The Automatic Shooting Range was patented by the Mechanical Trading Co. in 1891, and produced by Matthewson in limited quantities alongside a 'Try Your Grip' and 'Try your Twist' machine.

Two other shooting ranges, numbers 118 and 132, were sold in Mechanical Music, Technical Apparatus, Advertising and Amusement Machines on 12 April 2001, lots 117 and 118. Both machines had been painted red and were reputedly purchased from Chessington Zoo in the 1950's. Automatic Shooting Range no. 157 has the remains of the same red paint on the inside and was acquired from Chessington by the vendor.
