Lot Essay

Such pattern books appeared in the mid-19th century, strongly influenced by the European interest in collecting, cataloguing and classifying and this example may have been specifically commissioned by a European. Thomas Holbein Hendley, for example, employed artists in Jaipur to copy paintings and motifs for the The Journal of Indian Art, of which he was editor.
Pattern books are however rare. For another example showing textile patterns see: Crill,R and Stronge,S: Indian Floral Patterns, The Victoria and Albert Colour Books Series, Webb & Bower 1985 and The Indian Heritage, no.171.
