A massive pair of Cantonese baluster vases
19th century
wtih everted foliate rims moulded recumbent lion handles and dragons to the shoulders, painted and gilt with shaped panels of dignitaries and warriors on terraces and in mountainous landscapes, on grounds densely decorated with birds and butterflies amongst scattered fruit and flower sprays -- 53½in. (136cms) high; with stepped octagonal black and gold lacquered wood stands decorated with inset porcelain prunus blossom and plaques, on grounds of foaming waves, foliate and floral motifs -- 20¾in. (52.5cms) high, (flaking, chips and old wear).
