Diederich first became interested in ceramics around 1923, during a trip to Morroco. He continued to draw on the animal and sporting themes which were so characteristic of his art. In 1927 he was awarded a gold medal by the Architectural League in New York. Examples were also featured in the 'International Exhibition of Ceramic Art' organized by the Metropoliatn Museum of Art in 1928.
