Lot Essay

An identical envelope is seen at the beginning of the film as M [Judi Dench] discusses the looming international crisis created by media mogul Elliott Carver [Jonathan Pryce] with Bond [Pierce Brosan] whilst they drive through London. As she tells him she is sending him to Hamburg to pursue Carver, she hands him the envelope. It is seen again when Bond arrives at the U.S. airforce base somewhere in the South China Sea having retrieved the encoder from Carver's secret laboratory. Bond is introduced by CIA agent Jack Wade [Joe Don Baker] to Dr.Greenwall, the U.S. airforce GPS expert, who is delighted to see the missing encoder which is in Bond's briefcase on top of the MI6 envelope.
