The present lot is a study for the large painting The Lord is My Shepherd in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The title of the painting is borrowed from "The Lord's Prayer" which is often recited at mealtime, and which appears on a wall plaque depicted in the final version. The couple at the table are George West and his wife Sabrina. Thomas Hart Benton first sketched the Wests in their kitchen in the summer of 1922, but did not finish this work until 1926.
