Smith Woodhouse--Vintage 1980
My highest rating of the fourteen '80s tasted blind at Christie's in June 1990. Equally impressive at the line-up arranged by James Symington: notably deep, plummy; very forthcoming fruit on the nose, richness, almost malty; very sweet, full-bodied, lovely flavour, intensity and length. Coincidentally served at Château Margaux and Château Lafite dinners at Brooks' in 2000, the 1980 acidity cutting the Stilton well. M.B.
