Blackman wrote in a letter to the current owner of this work that it was painted during his time in Brisbane. He went on to say that "Brisbane then was the city of my imagination and my dreams and if water flows under the bridge it is what the French call 'eau de vie' the water of life." (C Blackman, 2 November 2000.)
