FIRST EDITION OF BOTH WORKS. According to Rives Childs, of all Restif's works Le Paysan perverti had the greatest influence on the development of modern French literature. This epistolary novel tells the story of Edmond, a well-bred and innocent boy from the country, and his sister Ursule who join the general migration from the country. Once arrived in the town, however, they succumb to depravity and come to a miserable end. The story has strong autobiographical tendencies as Restif himself was the son of a farmer who moved to Paris when he was 21 years old. Cioranescu 52700 (1st work); Cohen-de-Ricci 871-873; Ray French, p. 142; Rives Childs xiv and xxix, together with Les Figures de Paysan perverti; les Figures de la Paysane pervertie in uniform binding [1783-85]; Cohen-de-Ricci 873; Rives Childs xxvi).
