SONNERAT, Pierre (1749-1811). Voyage à la Nouvelle Guinée, dans lequel on trouve la description des lieux, des observations physiques & morales, & des détails relatifs à l'histoire naturelle dans le regne animal & le regne végétal, Paris: Ruault, 1776.

4° (290 x 196mm.), engraved frontispiece and 118 plates (one plate numbered as two: 90-91) by C. Bacquoy after Desmoulins and P. Sonnerat, wood-engraved headpieces (a few leaves and plates very lightly browned, a few light spots), contemporary crimson morocco gilt, triple fillet border on sides, gilt spine divided in 6 compartments with raised bands, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (lightly rubbed). Provenance: JOHN HUNTER (1738-1821, vice-admiral and governor of New South Wales from 1795-1801, bookplate).

Hunters copy of this important work on New Guinea, "Under the auspices of Hunter, himself an experienced and scientific navigator, the exploration of the coast line of Terra Australis made rapid progress, and to him must be assigned a share in the credit of the early discoveries of George Bass and Matthew Flinders" (DNB). During his extensive travels in Asia, mainly to the Philippines and the Moluccas, Sonnerat brought back a botanical and zoological collection which formed the basis of this, his first major publication. "The work appears to have been a supplement to Brisson's "Ornithologie (1760) and a link with Histoire naturelle des oiseaux of Buffon and Guéneau de Montbéliard ... It no doubt promoted his admission to the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts of Lyons as associate member, and his election on 19 January 1774 to the Académie Royale des Sciences as correspondent of the botanist Adanson." (DSB). Second edition, Nissen IVB 885; Zimmer 596-7.
