2 volumes, large 8° in 4's (269 x 181mm.), half titles, titles printed in red and black with the Pickering anchor and dolphin device, engraved frontispiece in volume II, 2 portraits of Cotton and 2 of Walton (in 2 states), another portrait of Walton, 9 plates and 40 vignettes with a duplicate set of the illustrations before letters (some offsetting, spotting and browning), green morocco gilt by J. Wright, spine lavishly decorated in gilt, gilt inner dentelles (scuff mark on front cover of vol. II, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Frank Linsly James (bookplate).

First edition by Sir Harry Nicolas, generally regarded as the best 19th-century edition in terms of fine printing and beauty of illustration, the text is based on the fifth edition of 1676. "This superb edition contains the variations of all the first five editions, voluminous notes, with original and elaborate memoirs of Walton and Cotton, presenting many new facts. All the illustrations, with the exception of Cotton's Fishing House which is on wood, are engraved on copper or steel" (Westwood & Satchell p. 228). Horne 43; Petit 2145. (2)
