MONARDES, Nicolás (1498-1588). Primera y segunda y tercera partes de la historia medicinal de las cosas que se traen de nuestras Indias Occidentales que siruen en medicina, Seville: Alonso Escrivano, 1574.
4° (196 x 137mm.), 12 woodcut illustrations, mostly large, in the text, fine large historiated initials (some browning and spotting, lacks the final blank), 18th-century vellum. Provenance: Antonio Morzino Monales (purchase inscription dated 1757 on title-verso).
FIRST COMPLETE EDITION of the works of the eminent Spanish doctor and botanist whose first two books had appeared in 1569 and 1571 and whose collected works were translated into most European languages. It is, without doubt, the most important early source for our knowledge of botany and medicinal discoveries made in the New World and particularly interesting for its long description (and illustration) of the tobacco plant, with its properties, at the beginning of book 2.
