Large 4° (273 x 190mm.), engraved title, engraved portraits of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis, 12 engraved plates by Matthaeus Greuter (repaired tear to first leaf of preface, some browning), old limp vellum (neat repairs to small area of spine and lower cover, later endpapers). Provenance: ownership inscription partially erased from head of title).
A beautifully illustrated record of Marie de Médicis entry into Avignon: a rare Avignon festival book. The theme of the 'fête' was a labyrinth with twelve triumphal arches, each decorated with representations of the Labours of Hercules symbolising the deeds and virtues of Henri IV (the 'Gallic Hercules').
