COKE, Sir Edward (1552-1634). Les reports [The Twelfth Part of the Reports ... Certain Select Cases in Law]. London: [Adam Islip] for T. Wight [later volumes: for the Company of Stationers], [1601?]-1616. [Volume XII]: T. Roycroft for H. Twyford [and others], 1659.

12 volumes, 2° (271 x 186mm.) Black letter. Title of volume I within a woodcut border, a few other volumes with woodcut headpieces. (A few minor imperfections, occasional light browning). Late 17th/early 18th-century calf (rebacked, corners repaired). Provenance: Robert Bertie (late 17th-century signature on titles).

A fine collection of the complete set of Coke's Reports in 12 volumes, several of which are first editions. By 1594 Coke had been successively Recorder of Norwich and London, Speaker of the House of Commons, Solicitor-General and Attorney-General. Later, in his determination to demonstrate that the royal prerogative should not override the law, he was dismissed by James I. His Cases and, even more, his Institutes which were published in 1628, are the very cornerstone upon which English Common Law stands (or, perhaps, stood). STC 5493.4, 5496, 5499, 5502, 5504, 5509, 5511, 5513, 5516, 5518, 5522, Wing C4969 & Wing C4909. Sold as a collection, not subject to return. (12)
