VIOLET, Thomas (fl.1634-1662). A Petition against the Jewes ... together with Several Reasons, proving the East-India Trade, the Turkey Trade ... may all be driven without transporting Gold or Silver out of England, London, 1661.
4° (224 x 160mm). (Some browning and staining.) 18th-century sheep, gilt arms of the Signet Library on sides (rebacked, extremities rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: Kenneth K. Knight (sale Christie's, 31 October 1979, lot 378).
ONLY EDITION of Violet's vehement plea to Charles II to expel the Jews from England into which they had only been readmitted four years previously. One of the curious reasons he propounds is that far too many English Christians are being seduced into Jewish practices and some are even being proselytised. Violet, apart from writing several treatises on trade, was a goldsmith and an alderman of London. During the Civil War he sided with the King and as a result spent four years in the Tower. 'He was probably a restless, meddling man, who failed to please his friends, while he certainly displeased his enemies' (DNB). Wing V584; Kress 1078 (without the 4 leaves containing the petition against the Jews); Goldsmiths' 1615.
