DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Autograph letter (in the 3rd person) to John Lilivale of the Early Closing Association, Tavistock House, London, 3 February 1855, one page, 8vo, on a bifolium (light soiling), envelope with autograph signature, both tipped into a minute book of the Early Closing Association.
Dickens politely declines a request of the Early Closing Association, pleading that 'all the public engagements of that nature he has leisure to make during the present year, are already made'. In fact 1855, in the break between the writing of Hard Times and Little Dorrit, was a year of notably increased political activity for Dickens.
