GERMAN MILITARY MANUSCRIPT. Manuscript military text-book 'Handt-Griff des Neuen Exercitium von Anno 1751', in German in a clear italic hand on paper, one illustration of a soldier and ten plans of manoeuvres, 151 pages, 4to (occasional acidification), sheep (worn).
The complete education of a soldier. The subtitle describes it as a work 'Welches bestehet, in Sieben und Fünffzig Tempo mit der Explication, wie ein jedes Tempo Natürlicher weise, doch lebhafft, solle von dem Soldaten Gemacht werden' (which contains in 57 tempos how each tempo should be done naturally but promptly by the troops). The manuscript sets out in a clear and methodical style the whole range of drills and manoeuvres required of the modern soldier, together with the appropriate verbal commands and drum beats. Annotations in a late 18th-century Italian hand to the pastedowns indicate an early application of this methodical approach south of the Alps.
