MORRIS, William (1834-1896). Autograph letter signed to Beatty, Kelmscott House, Hammersmith, 24 September n.y., 1½ pages, 8vo, blank; RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Two autograph letters signed (one with initials), to [the Reverend R.St J.] Tyrrwhitt, Brantiswood, n.d. [14 September 1879] and to an unidentified correspondent, Denmark Hill, n.d. [1867], 4 pages, 8vo (integral leaf cut from second letter).
Morris refers to Stepniak, and to his own preferred style of address, 'By the way my name is not 'Sir' but Morris, & my title (when G.B.S. is not by) is "Comrade"'. Ruskin defends his work The Laws of Fesolé, in which Marine Engineers need not take offence 'at my impertinence to the meridian of Greenwich - the methods of projection and of shade are independent of course of any crotchets of mine in preferring Florence to Greenwich as a centre of the Earth'. The second letter refers to photographs of himself.
Sergius Stepniak, the Russian Nihilist, had settled in Bedford Park. (3)
