[CHETHAM, James (1640-1692)]. The Angler's Vade Mecum; or, A compendious yet full discourse of angling discovering the aptest methods and ways, exactest rules, properest baits, and choicest experiments for the catching of all manner of fresh water fish, London: for Tho. Bassett, [1681.]

Small 8° (150 x 90mm.), title ruled in black, historiated initial (title and A2 with crude repair to lower margin, torn with loss of date, some browning and spotting throughout, margins of O3 & 4 frayed, a few contemporary manuscript annotations in black ink), modern cloth by Woodstencroft of Warrington (covers very lightly marked).

FIRST EDITION, published anonymously. Chetham notes in the preface: "The author hath forborne to affix his name; not that he is ashamed to own it, but wishes the reader to regard things, more than empty names". Westwood comments favourably: "Cheetham's prefaces are in Diogenes' vein, curt and caustic; he escapes from the category of manual makers, and takes rank as one of the original writers on the sport". Wing C3788; Westwood and Satchell pp. 59-60.
