Lot Essay

Monument du Costume Physique et Moral de la Fin du Dex-huitième Siècle, with text by Nicolas-Edme Restif de la Bretonne, is one of the most notable publications in the history of 18th Century printmaking. It was published in three series, the first (1775) after designs by S. Freudenberg, and the following two after J.M. Moureau le jeune (1776-7, 1783). The illustrations depict events from the life of a fashionable young man and woman, and forms a pictorial record of the manner, style and social ambience of the era.
