A Sooty Glove Puppet
with golden mohair, black stitched nose, orange and black plastic eyes, black dralon ears, extended skirt with felt-tip inside 'FILM ?ARR???? RIGHT', brown felt pads and hook in skirt --13in. (33cm.) high, 1980s (pads recovered and slight wear)

Provenance

Although no provenance is available for this Sooty, the Sooty Company confirm it is an original. The basic glove puppet is the same as the one sold as toys, but only the performing ones were sold with skirts.

Lot Essay

This glove puppet is identical to the Sooty sold in these rooms on the 4th December 2000. It fits the description of the puppets used during the 1970s and 1980s. All stage and television puppets were marked as each puppeteer using them having different sized hands and fingers. A snug fit was essential for the puppets to handle props. The puppet also had a loop on the bottom of the skirt for pre-set placement.

It is believed that over a thousand puppets have been used during the shows.
