An unusual 1/8th scale display model of the Petone Fire Board Leyland Fire Appliance no.2,
built by C.J. McGrath 1927-30, with angle section chassis with rubber tyred wheels, working steering, driver's seat with batttery box under, engine controls, radiator, bournet working headlamps, leaf springs, centrifugal pump with suction and delivery valves and nozzles, suction hose and rose, extending and collapsible ladders, hose reel and pipe, branches, bell, tools and old wiring. Further details include opening foot board boxes with three leather belts with axes and hose spanners, tripod mounted serarchlight, opening main box with helmet and spare tyre and many other details, finished in red with yellow lining and chrome plated fittings -- 17 x 39in. (43 x 99cm). Four plated axle stands and glazed case.

Lot Essay

A certificate is included with this model, inscribed: Awarded First Prize New Zealand Centennial Exhibition (Model Engineering Section) Wellington 1939-40, C.J.McGrath Class C Engineering (Open Class) and a white metal cup with exhibition plaque engraved J.McGrath 'Fire Engine' Special Merit.

The glazed case legend is inscribed 1914 Leyland Frire Engine Working Model of the First Leyland Fire Engine to arrive in New Zealand. Built to scale by J.McGrath Fire Station Petrone Completed 1939 but it would appear that the date, 1914, is not correct.
