A rare late 19th-Century English portable assay balance,
signed O. WOLTERS & SONS LONDON, the beam divided 1-9.5 on one side of the fulcrum, for use with rider weights and fine wire index, the axis of the beam located between two 'V' supports and with vertical steel index to read off a graduated ivory plaque located near the base of the lacquered-brass column with rectangular plinth base, with turning release mechanism and removable knurled knob, the two removable silver pans with fine wire suspension pan-holders arranged to stow on two sockel mounts when not in use, the beam scale mounted within a mahogany-framed casing with removable glazed front panel, the lower casing with two accessory drawers containing two spare pans and a collection of gold, platinum and silver foil weights, the drawers with ivory pulls (one broken off), the fall front of the case secured by three brass latches - 8¼in. (21cm.) high; a 2½in. (6.3cm.) diameter ivory case of silver assay weights, inscribed on the lid and signed L. Oertling London; a set of ten (of thirteen) silver foil weights and five brass weights, with a turned ivory weight, in a fitted ebony case stamped VOLAND & WONS NEW ROCHELLE NY -- 3in. (7.6cm.) wide; and another set of silver foil and brass weights by VOLAND & SONS NEW ROCHELLE N.Y. with ivory-handled tweezes, in a fitted mahogany case -- 5¼in. (13.3cm.) wide
