A fine 19th-Century lacquered-brass compound binocular microscope,
signed on the Y-shaped foot J.B. Dancer Optician Manchester, also with an inscription PRESENTED TO George Turner Esq M.D. by the Olive bearers and friends in the STOCKPORT NORTH CIRCUIT August 31 1870, with rack and pinion adjustment to the eyepieces (defective), rack and pinion focusing to the double body-tube, with micrometer fine adjustment, nicol prism, mechanical stage and swinging substage plano-concave mirror, tilting on an axis suported by two brass pillars, on a Y-shaped foot, in the original glass-fronted mahogany carrying case with eight accessory drawers containing one 2in. and two 1in. Dancer objectives in brass canisters, two pairs of eyepieces, two marked A, one marked C, one marked D, a substage prism attachment, stage forceps, a Watson 1in. objective, a brass canister with a set of coloured glass discs and japanned metal mirror covers, two further substage prism attachments (wrong size) and other items, with 88 mostly amateur-prepared slides, and one drawer with paper notes including a table of magnification, notes on slide preparation and botanical subjects, also with a note reading When I bought this microscope from Miss Arnold it was not complete with all the items to fit into the various slots!, the case with brass carrying handle -- 18in. (45.7cm.) high
