A fine 18th-Century silver Butterfield-pattern horizontal compass sundial,
signed on the plate Langlois AParis aux Galleries du Louvre, the folding gnomon with latitude scale 40°-60° and bird-shaped pointer, with hour scales 4-12, 1-8 (x2), III-XII, I-VIII and V-XII, I-VII for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, the glazed compass box with blued-iron needle and sixteen compass direction initials, north with a fleur-de-lys, the underside with the names and latitudes for twenty-five continental cities and towns -- 3 1/8in. (8cm.) long
