A fine 18th-Century silver Butterfield-pattern compass sundial,
signed on the plate Butterfield AParis, the folding gnomon graduated 40°-60° with bird-shaped pointer, with four hour scales 4-12, 1-8, II-XII, I-VIII, 5-12, 1-8 and VI-XII, I-VII for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, with glazed compass with blued-iron needle and wind rose, the underside finely engraved with the latitudes of thirty-two continental cities and towns -- 3 1/8in. (7.9cm.) long
