A late 18th-Century brass Butterfield-type compass sundial,
signed on the octagonal horizontal plate Le Maire fils AParis, the decoratively engraved folding latitude arc graduated 40°-60° with bird-shaped pointer, the horizontal plate with four hour scales for 52°, 49°, 46° and 43°, the glazed compass box with blued-iron needle with brass cap, the underside of the box with the latitudes of six continental cities in degrees and minutes, the underside of the plate with a further twenty latitudes -- 2 7/8in. (7.3cm.) wide, with a plush-covered fitted base; together with an elegant silver-cased pocket compass, with blued-steel needle marked N and S, the enamelled face with wind rose, fleur-de-lys and cardinal compass points, the silver casing decoratively engraved on the reverse, with suspension loop -- 1½in. (3.8cm.) wide
