Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1865
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Recent château capsule and label. Old hand-blown glass. Recently recorked at the Château (at the time of the Rosebery sale in 1967 this bottle had a heavy wax capsule. This was removed when the bottle was recorked at the Château on 17th April 1981 and replaced by the standard metal embossed Château capsule). Level into neck
Like the double-magnum of Lafite 1865 sold earlier this year at Christie's (19th July, Lot 637), the provenance of this wonderful, rare bottle is well documented. On 31st May 1967, during the infant Wine Department's 2nd year of business, the distinguished cellars of the Earl of Rosebery came under the hammer at Christie's. Amongst other rarities which had been removed from Dalmeny House were 13 double-magnums of Château Lafite 1865. They were originally purchased from Cockburns, Leith and were binned in 1868. The cellar at Dalmeny was described in 1967 as a model of its kind and the wines had lain undisturbed, apart from periodic checks and re-sealing, since original binning.
This double-magnum was resold at Christie's on 11th June 1981 and has since been in private hands. It remains in fabulous condition.
Tasting note : Tasting note: A bottle of the same provenance was tasted by Michael Broadbent M.W. at the Overton tasting in 1979: "Medium colour, still remarkably red, lively and youthful. The bouquet, initially light, gentle yet rich, developed deep vinosity and held a rich fruitiness for two hours without effort. On the palate medium-dry on entry but with a very dry finish. Fairly full-bodied, amazingly fine flavour, rich and chewy, with perfect balance, tannin and acidity. 19/20
The sturdiest and most dependable of all the pre-phylloxera vintages and still drinking despite its great age. In fact I was fortunate enough to taste ( and drink - one does not spit out a wine of this eminience) some 1865 Lafite very recently, a bottle recorked at the Château in 1980. It still has a good colour for its age, the bouquet coming to life in the glass. Fairly full-bodied with its life preserving tannin still intact. More than a bit of history - the grapes were picked in the year Lincoln was assasinated! A firm, spicy old wine.
The double-magnum in this sale comes from the cellars of Lord Rosebery, one of a considerable, indeed unprecedented, quantity of old Lafite, which graced Christie's first-ever "Finest and Rarest" sale. With this provenance and in this condition it should be magnificent.
