The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España was formed in March
1879, by two brothers from Bilbao, Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asua, and Isidro Corcuera from Logroño. Four generations later the firm is still managed by the Rea de Asúa family, although now by two cousins.
The brothers came from a commercial shipping family, but converted their interests to wine at a time when the first 'bodegas' were being developed in Rioja. CVNE, one of the original Rioja houses, was born.
CVNE has a very specific quality policy concerning Gran Reservas. They are only made in the very finest vintages when the winemaker considers the fruit, extract and acidity balance to be excepitional. It has to be, as C.V.N.E. have a policy of three years oak maturation for their Gran Reservas. Hence none were made, for exmaple, in the 1992 and 1993 vintages. Additionally, when stocks reach around the equivalent of 75 cases the wine is withdrawn from sale and the balance kept as library reserves, being released on rare occaisions
This auction represents the first occaision that the 1939 Corona is commercially available within the U.K. The wine was discovered during reconstruction work on the bodega. Records were checked and it was verified that a sweet white Rioja had been made that year. The 1939 vintage was harvested later than the then usual 12th October start date due to the number of men still involved in the Spanish Civil War. This meant that the Malvasia had ripened perfectly for desset wine making
The newly discovered wine was tasted and declared to be very fine although in need of some refreshment. Under the supervision of the Consejo Regulador, the wine was topped up with a maximum 10 of sweet Malvasia from the excellent 1970, rebottled and recorked.
There are now less than 2000 bottles left at CVNE.
