BODEGAS LOPEZ DE HEREDIA
In 1877, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, born in Santiago de Chile of Spanish parents, settled in Haro and began his involvement in wine trade, exporting large quantities of wine to France.
Little by little he extended his land which he ploughed and planted with vines for the first time, until by 1914, he had managed to create the 'Vina Tondonia', and subsequently, the vineyards of the Company.
During the same period he also built an industrial complex thus creating the new Bodega which, after his death, was extended to its present dimensions by his sons, Rafeal and Julio César. Now Pedro and Rafael, the fourth generation continue the family tradition.
It is easy to imagine, therefore, the care and attention which is given to every detail of the wine making process, maturing and ageing of the wines, as this has been the very lifeblood of not only three generations of the Lopez de Heredia family, but also, in many cases, of several generations of the families of many of the current employees.
It is equally evident that the Bodega itself is as much a labour of love as the making of the wines. Built as it is, of solid blocks of stone resting on rock which has been tunelled through (thereby creating the various underground galleries), it is so old and grandoise that many refer to it as the 'Wine Cathedral of Haro'. Like all Cathedrals, it has been several centuries in the making and, although it is not yet finished, it reflects the hard work of several generations of the López de Heredia family.
The philosphy of the Bodega is maximum care in creating the typical wines of Rioja, monastic and absolute patience in the ageing and maturing of the wines.
