LA RIOJA ALTA

The Bodega was founded by Don Daniel-Alfedo Ardanza y Sanchez in 1890 when he convinced a number of his countrymen to sign a formation deed of the 'Sociedad Vinicola de La Rioja Alta'. The bodega was situated in Vicuana, the celebrated station quarter of Haro.

Three months after the company was formed, 3,500 Bordeaux casks were purchased. A year later the company was renamed La Rioja Alta.

In 1892, 683,627 kgs of grapes were already being processed, only for the vines to be decimated by phylloxera a few months later. Huge investment was necessary to recover from the plague. The largest was the importing of American vine stocks, immune to phylloxera, onto which native grape varietes could be grafted. It was then that the decision was taken to increase the production of bottled wine.

In 1904, Don Alfredo Ardanza, founder of La Rioja Alta and also of 'Bodegas Ardanza' proposed the merger of both companies, a proposition which was unanimously agreed upon. To celebrate this occaision a very special wine was marketed, 'Reserva 1904', now called 'Gran Reserva 904'.

In 1942, under the chairmanship of Don Leandro Ardanza Angulo, a tradename was registered which was to become 'Viña Ardanza'. The name originated from one of the families with the closest links to the bodega.
In 1974, a new brand was introduced on the market, 'Viña Arana'. However, it was not a new wine merely the new commercial name for the classic 6-year-old wine.

La Rioja Alta, without losing sight of the aim for maximum quality, is continualyy expanding installations and vineyards, totalling at present (including extension in Labastida), 51,000 American oak casks for the preparation of wines, more than 6 million bottles of wine in the process of ageing and more than three hundred and fifty hectares of vineyards
