VINEDOS DEL CONTINO
When Contino was founded in 1974, the aim was to create a winery that was different from other wineries in Rioja. The aim was to create an estate similar to a Bordelais château. The project was a joint venture between Ricardo Pérez Calvet (the vineyard owner), Antonio Sánchez Gómez and two C.V.N.E. shareholders, Luis I. Vallejo Chalbaud and José de Madrazo y Real de Asua. C.V.N.E. had been purchasing grapes from this vineyard since the 1940's.
The first vintage was in 1974 with a production of 50,000 bottles
From this first vintage, Contino has been seen to be completely atypical of Rioja. It has its own peculiar microclimate and is not blended with wines from other vineyards and sometimes is only made up of certain parcels from within the vineyard. Its vintages are unique, but always very fine
The vineyard is well-sheltered and situated on a bend on the River Ebro, 5 kms west of Logroño. The unique microclimate means that it is quite usual for Contino to produce faboulous wines as ordinary or even poor. 1974 was one such year.
In 1983 vintage produce such ripe grapes that the levels of alcohol being produced were so high that only the very first part of the harvest went into the wine. The remainder was sold for blending into standard Rioja Alavesa wine. The 1983 was never released for sale in the U.K.
