The configuration of the Virgin and Child follows that of the eponymous work by Van Cleve formerly in the Kappel collection, Berlin, dated to circa 1510-2 (see M. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, IX, part I, p. 61, no. 55, fig. 69), of which several early copies are known. The present picture is unique in the presence of the ledge, and the landscape background, which is by an artist close to Lucas Gassel . Joos' composition derived, in turn, from Robert Campin's Virgin and Child in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt.
