拍品专文

Sold with a certificate, dated 10 December 1999, by Jan de Maere stating his opinion that this is an originally autograph work by Pourbus, left incomplete at his death and finished by his workshop.

Dr. Suzanne Bergmans, in her 1967 article, loc. cit., first proposed that this picture is the prime version of the composition of Pourbus' eponymous altarpiece in the cathedral of St. Bavo, Ghent. After examining the picture in 2000, this view was reiterated by Dr. van den Brink, Head Conservator of the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, on the basis of the various pentimenti in the work - including to the position of the standing figure on the left of the picture, and to those in the right background.
