The artist enjoyed great success in his day. Born in Antwerp, he settled in Paris in the early years of the eighteenth century, where he adapted the artistic idiom of Philips Wouverman in such scenes as the present work, imbuing them with a delicacy and elegance of palette more suited to the taste of Régence France. A protégé of the House of Orleans, he was in 1729 appointed Peinte Ordinaire du Roi at the court of King Louis XV.
