Contemporary red crushed levant morocco, covers with a quintuple gilt border around elaborate cornerpieces of gilt leafy tendrils, baskets, flowers, dots and stars; spines, doublures and silk-lined endpapers all gilt, g.e., signed on upper doublure Zaehnsdorf, 1899; original gilt-printed stiff wrappers preserved (upper joint slightly starting, one spine end bumped, a few very tiny other spots of wear); morocco chemise (spine worn); box (broken). Provenance: Theodore Low DeVinne (bookplate). LIMITED EDITION, number 145 of 150 copies. The first Grolier Club publication. Theodore DeVinne was the printer of this book and one of the most notably artistic printers of the industrial age; as such, he was an examplar of Grolier Club values.
