Lot Essay

Born in Glasgow Annie French studied at GSA under F.H Newberry. Her book illustrations, greetings-card designs and pen and watercolour compositions upon vellum were similar in their art nouveau style to the work of her near contemporary, Jessie Marion King. Annie French took over King's post in the GSA department of design in 1909. In 1914 she married the artist George Wooliscroft Rhead (1854-1920) and settled in London.
