Lot Essay
Captain Shirley Cuthbert Day, [M.C.], who was born in April 1893 and was from Bournemouth, enlisted in the 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters in November 1914. Subsequently granted a Commission in the same unit, he arrived in France in late December 1915 and went on to win the M.C. (London Gazette 1.1.1917 refers). Tragically, he was killed in action at the Third Battle of Ypres on 12.10.1917, while still serving with the 10th Battalion. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
