'Forming part of Macpherson's Brigade of the Kabul-Kandahar Field Force, the 2nd Goorkhas took part, in the month of August 1880, in the advance to the relief of the Southern capital. In the crowning defeat of the enemy at the Battle of Kandahar on 1 September, the Regiment, as one of two leading Battalions of the 1st Brigade, played a conspicuous part, being engaged in the successive captures of the villages of Gandi Mullah Sahibad and Pir Paimal, and finally assisted in carrying the entrenched position on which the enemy made a final stand. The casualties of the Regiment on this day were eight men killed, and Lieutenant-Colonel Battye and 21 men wounded' (Shadbolt refers)
