Private Edward Wool (or Wooll) was born in Stamford Barum, Lincolnshire and originally enlisted in the 1st Dragoons in April 1837, aged 19 years. Transferring to the 9th Lancers in April 1841, he went on to see action at the Battle of Punniar in December of the following year, in addition to the Battles of Sobraon, Chilianwala and Goojerat. He was discharged back at Chatham in July 1852.
