Lot Essay

Petty Officer William James Bush was born in County Tyrone in October 1887 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1897. Joining the Ship's Company of H.M.S. Terrible two years later, he went on to serve off South Africa during the Boer War and off China in the Boxer Rebellion. The outbreak of hostilities found him employed as a Petty Officer aboard the Battle Cruiser Tiger, in which ship he participated in the Battle of Dogger Bank, before removing to the Cruiser Glorious in October 1916. Bush was finally pensioned ashore in October 1921.
