Commander A.F. Freer served as Executive 2nd Officer of the Allan Lines' Bavarian in the South Africa operations of 1899-1902. Appointed a Lieutenant in the R.N.R. in July 1907, he was advanced to Lieutenant-Commander in July 1915 and to Commander in June 1919.
