Lot Essay

Chief Petty Officer James Thomas Cletheroe was born in Dover, Kent in January 1881 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1899. Having gained Petty Officer status by the advent of hostilities in August 1914, he joined the Ship's Company of the Cruiser H.M.S. Phaeton in February 1915 and remained so employed until early 1920, a period of service that encompassed his participation in the Battle of Jutland, and subsequent award of the Russian St. George's Medal - sold with verification. Cletheroe had been awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal back in March 1914 and was finally pensioned ashore in early 1921.
