Colonel Stuart McKenzie Saunders was born at Devonport in September 1883 and qualified in medicine at Guy's Hospital in 1907. In the following year he was gazetted to the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Lieutenant and between 1911-21 served on secondment to the Egyptian Army. A veteran of the Gallipoli operations, Saunders also served in the Darfur operations of 1915-16 and was twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 29.5.1917 and 5.6.1919 refer). He is also confirmed in Army Honours and Awards as having been awarded the Order of the Nile, Fourth Class.
Placed on the Reserve of Officers in late 1938, Saunders was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Colonel and served with the B.E.F. between December 1939 and June 1940. Further wartime appointments followed, as did advancement to Temporary Colonel in October 1943, and he reverted to the Retired List in November 1945 with the Honorary Rank of Colonel.
