Colour-Sergeant Richard Charles Bent was born at Sandport, Portsmouth in January 1893 and enlisted as a Bugler in the Royal Marine Artillery in October 1898, aged 15 years. A Gunner aboard the Battleship Orion by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he went on to serve in her at Jutland in May 1916, his advancement to Bombardier taking place on the very day of the Battle. Remaining a Regular between the Wars, Bent was awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in February 1926, advanced to Colour-Sergeant in August 1929 and discharged at the end of his second period of engagement in January 1932 - 'Claims to the M.S.M. and an Annuity were investigated at time of discharge and not recommended' (P.R.O. ADM 159/85 refers). The latter source also confirms his appointment to the Royal Marine Police in April 1933, employment that no doubt led to his eventual career with the Metropolitan Police and entitlement to an E.II.R. Exemplary Service Medal. He died in February 1972.
